Any security camera can warn you that someone is lurking outside of your house—but what if that person actually turns out to be a family member? Smart home provider Nest has come up with a technology that could spare homeowners from the embarrassment of calling the police on a relative. The company’s new Nest Cam IQ Outdoor features Nest Aware, a system that can use face recognition to differentiate intruders from in-laws.
The Next Cam IQ Outdoor has built-in software that can detect movement and sound, automatically noting motion. The cloud-based Nest Aware takes this cognizance to the next level, able to recognize a wide array of parameters and provide alerts based on its observations.
For starters, when a camera detects someone within view, Nest Aware takes a snapshot of the person and issues a notification to the system owner.
Even more sophisticated, Nest Aware can distinguish between familiar faces and strangers. When the camera sees a new face, it asks the owner whether he or she knows that person via a prompt on their mobile device. The owner then can respond affirmatively or negatively, allowing Nest Aware’s face recognition system to identify and remember family members and other people familiar to the household.
The system also can perform other kinds of recognition, such as telling the difference between a person speaking and a dog barking.
Nest Aware is available to Nest camera owners as a subscription service. The artificial intelligence processing is conducted using advanced algorithms residing on Nest’s servers.
Nest stated that advanced capabilities like face recognition require greater processing power than can be supported by a camera itself. The company added that it’s constantly improving its algorithms. Nest Aware also can refine individual cameras’ motion and sound detection, improving their accuracy.
Nest Cam IQ Outdoor comes with a 1/2.5-inch, 8-megapixel color sensor that supports a 4K resolution. The camera also includes a 12x digital zoom and enhance and close-up tracking view. The devices also includes a 130-degree diagonal field of view.
The camera is capable of operating in the dark, featuring night vision with high-power 850 nanometer infrared LEDs.
On the audio front, Nest Cam IQ Outdoor supports a high-quality speaker with a three-microphone array. It also integrates a speaker, allowing the user to interact with potential intruders.
