Finland’s government-owned betting agency Veikkausm is using a range of big-data analytics technologies—including sentiment analysis in the future—to identify customers who may suffer from gambling addictions, according to Forbes.
The agency runs 20 different gambling ventures in the country, including the national lottery, scratch tickets, football pools and other forms of sports betting. With all types of gambling nationalized in Finland, Veikkausm works to ensure citizen well-being by checking to ensure users aren’t wagering in a compulsive manner.
To accomplish this, Veikkausm processes all gaming transactions and uses this information to develop user profiles. These profiles can reveal patterns indicative of a gambling problem.
In the future, Veikkausm intends to enlarge the amount of data it gathers about betting behavior. These plans include scanning customer-service emails using sentiment analysis technology, according to Forbes. Sentiment analysis will allow the agency to determine if emails have a positive, negative or neutral tone, perhaps revealing underlying addictive tendencies.
Veikkausm also will analyze social media data in order to determine how public sentiment impacts the odds.
If Veikkausm detects someone may have a gambling problem, it ceases marketing activity directed to that individual. However, in the future, the agency may engage in direct interventions with betting addicts.
